By Julia Evans CITY COUNCIL chief executive Karleen Edwards appears to have put the brakes on setting up a working party to look at road safety in Fendalton. Dr Edwards (right) sent a memo to residents on Glandovy, Idris and Straven Rds who are concerned about poor road layout, narrow cycleways and the high number of heavy vehicles in the area. She also sent it to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board. “Staff have suggested caution in establishing a working group due to the resource that will be required and the low likelihood of the working group being able to effect the changes requested,” she said in the memo. •Turn to page 8

THE CITY council has put the brakes on a bid by Fendalton residents to set up a working party to make their streets safer. Residents on Glandovy, Idris and Straven Rds say their streets are poorly laid out, have narrow cycleways and are used by too many heavy vehicles. Two weeks ago we revealed they had called on the city council to set up a working party to thrash out and solve the issues. But city council boss Karleen Edwards (see page 1) has just sent out a memo saying no to the working party. Her staff have told her that the chances of a working party being able to effect change is “low”. So the city council will talk with the community board about solutions. No prizes for guessing for what the residents think. –Barry Clarke

Call for cycleway to new sports hub By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn wants to see a better cycling route to the new Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Wigram. Dr Horn attended the Halswell Liaison Group meeting last week, where the request was made by members of the community. Residents also discussed the final 3D designs of the hub with city council staff. The first stage of the hub will see the athletics track up and running in March. The hockey turfs, tennis courts, rugby league fields and several other facilities will then be opened on the 32ha site between autumn next year and 2019. Dr Horn said the meeting was positive and a lot of great ideas were shared. “They [the designs] look good, I’m excited. It was nice to be able to input into some ideas around how the public might use that area. Not just seeing it as a sporting area, but also as a place people can go walking and things,” she said. Dr Horn said there were suggestions around the creation of a cycle route to the new hub that could go through Canterbury

Park, Aidanfield and then link to Hillmorton High School. “There is a track there which could be used already but it would be nice if it was a bit wider and a bit more intentional,” she said. Dr Horn said traffic was already a big problem in Halswell, so she would like to see more accessible bus, walking and cycling routes into the hub. “We need to encourage people to take the forms of transport which are less common,” she said. City council head of transport Lynette Ellis said stage one of

This is a 2.5m sealed, shared path on the western side of Templetons Rd which runs from the shared path on State Highway 75 to the boundary of the site,” she said. Mrs Ellis said an existing gravel path would also link to the Little River major cycle route, which will be sealed and lit at a later stage. “The hub has a minimum of 146 cycle parks, including a

City council manager of recreational services David Bailey said residents at the meeting also wanted to know what kind of impact there might be on traffic along McMahon Dr and Augustine Dr. He said other suggestions included play and shaded areas, water fountains and some environmentally-friendly measures. “City council staff will continue to work closely with the community going forward as work continues on the project,” he said.

RICCARTON GRAFFITI The city council’s Snap Send Solve app recorded 29 reports of graffiti in Upper Riccarton last month – 10 more than August. City council graffiti team leader Val Merryweather said the number of graffiti incidents fluctuated but the app had been a great success and simplified the reporting process. The area with the most graffiti incidents was the central city with 79 reports, while Upper Riccarton was ranked fifth. HORNBY PARTY RETURNS Hornby’s annual party will return next year after stopping in 2012 due to the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Delamain Residents’ Association spokesman Geoff Holland said a committee has been set up with local schools, charities, trusts and churches all helping to plan the event. It would investigate holding the party on March 24. NEW ROAD NAME The Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board will consider naming a road in Waterloo Business Park at its meeting tonight. The city council recommendation is to approve the name Synergy Lane. Other suggested names include Strategy Lane and Venture Lane.

CBHS students warned about drink driving •From page 5 I should’ve said: ‘Stop. Please pull over, I’m not comfortable, will you please let me out.’ It’s simple. That was the moment that changed my life forever. He was rounding a corner too fast on Remuera Rd in a 50km/h zone, going twice the speed limit-plus. He hit a power pole exactly where I was seated. We went through a garage door and halfway through a brick wall. I was in a coma for a month. When I woke up, I didn’t know I was there, I didn’t know what had happened because I don’t remember this night. I don’t remember a year and a half before this night or a year and a half after this night. Three years of my life is gone and I feel like I’m telling stories about another person. But these were my mistakes. It has affected my life hugely. I have diabetes, epilepsy, splenectomy – it took my spleen. These are the scars from one, two, three, four, five bad mistakes in one evening. I even had to have part of my skull replaced with titanium

plating. My left leg was partially replaced with a titanium rod and behind this metal front is the part of my brain that was most damaged. Sure, I damaged the left and right lobe but the frontal lobe is what makes it hard to behave correctly, behave socially correctly and manage my own life. I can’t plan. I work with six carers part time, 24/7. Every single day of my life is planned by someone else. That was not my plan when I was back at high school, this was not my plan when I was 17 years of age. But I made those mistakes. Partial loss of sight, partial loss of hearing, partial loss of smell. My left eye I can only see when I look in one direction. My right eye, I can’t see my hand when it’s right there. My left ear is deaf, which is a big bummer. I only have eight per cent taste left, which is a real bummer – I was a big food person. Not so much anymore. All of these things, all of these injuries, all of this crap in my

life could’ve been prevented by just thinking before I did those things. Before I finish this speech, I just have a few questions for you. How would you think, how would you feel if you were in my position? How would you feel having all of this happen to you and you were in the middle of it? What would you do to stop it again? And how would you live? Because every day I get up, I feel like I have less motivation. Every day I get up, it’s hard. There are three things you have to remember. Don’t drink and drive. Come on, it’s not that hard, is it? Second thing, (when you) hop into a car, put your seat belt on. It’s three seconds of your life. Put your seat belt on, even if you’re in the back seat. They save lives. Millions of lives. And next, if your friend is driving dangerously, if he’s driving fast, if he’s driving drunk – tell him to pull over, tell him to stop the car. You shouldn’t be embarrassed to ask because they should be the ones embarrassed for putting your life in danger. Thank you.

News Brakes put on road safety working party •From page 1 Concerned resident James Wilding said it was difficult to comprehend there would be a “low” chance of change with a working group. “Fundamental city council policy includes listening to and working with communities, creating healthy and safe communities and elected members making decisions. We want to work with the city council,” he said. Dr Edwards sent the memo after city council staff recommended the issues could be “sufficiently addressed” by having a work shop with the community board next month. That workshop would not include the public, which Mr Wilding said was “difficult to reconcile”. One issue Mr Wilding was expressly concerned about is the width of the cycleway on Idris Rd. Dr Edwards said the section of the cycle lane would be remarked by November. But Mr Wilding said the city council has only acknowledged one section of the cycle lane does not comply, when there are more than 10. The memo will be discussed by the community board at its meeting tonight.

Jennie Moreton - Good on (Canterbury Sports Ltd director Slava Meyn) for wanting to invest in Canterbury and good on the city council for trying to make the change go ahead. Seems like it’s going to happen so I’m not sure why other comments are so negative. The zoning was there when he planned the project initially so he can’t be surprised by it and the city council is working hard to find a way forward. Allan Ball – Here’s hoping commonsense can take place here. Surely they can change and rezone this area for the regeneration of Canterbury. Roxanne Oliver – Let the man do this it is an awesome venture. Wake up and smell the roses not the ashtray.

That side of Christchurch needs these facilities. Tony Champion – There’s always something to block something in NZ. NZ doesn’t understand liberty. AN UPPER Riccarton designer took out the open section in Selwyn’s first wearable arts competition. Art Couture NZ brought its first fashion show to life in Tai Tapu, attracting about 150 people through the door. The show, judged by designer Loretta Sloan and artists Steve Henderson and Blanche Fryer, featured about 29 designs. Mrs Crooks’ weird and wonderful design called A Window on Christchurch reflected the resilience of people following the earthquakes and Port Hills fire. She took home $300 for winning the open section. Mrs Crooks said she was thrilled with the win. “I went to the competition to check it out and see what the standard was like and I thought the standard was very high. I also wanted to support a Canterbury competition,” she said. Mrs Crooks started planning the garment about a year ago and started making it in January. It contains photos of quake-

Lindisfarne Nursery School Lindisfarne Nursery School was established by Tricia Cuthbert in 1987 and remains part of the Cuthbert family today. We are committed to Christchurch, to our community, our Lindisfarne families, and most importantly the futures and happiness of our children. We believe in developing children’s

feelings of self-worth, and encouraging tolerance and understanding of others. Our teachers all hold a Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood, and one holds a Diploma of Teaching in Primary as well as early childhood. She prepares the four year olds for school through an informal and brief daily ‘lesson’ time which the children love to take part in. We have a separate nursery with an outdoor area where the children discover and explore. We are a strong multi-cultural centre with committed teachers who embrace and celebrate diversity for our families. Morning and afternoon tea and a cooked lunch are provided, and we welcome visitors. MULTIPLE CHAMPS: The Canterbury under-15 B girls team were crowned national champions for the sixth year in a row.

Canty girls take out Keeping up with what girls national hockey titles want includes Herbology with Professor Sprout Part of the magic of being a girl-led organisation is that GirlGuiding New Zealand can offer camps and activities that girls really love. A recent example is a Harry Potter camp held in Christchurch by Westburn Guides and Brownies which saw girls enjoying lessons on herbology, potions, duels, Quiddich and care of magical creatures.

The two-day camp was a fantastic example of how GirlGuiding New Zealand brings girls together to challenge them, excite them to learn new things, make friends and above all, have fun. GirlGuiding Christchurch is looking for people who can share their skills with the girls and young women in their community. Volunteering with us means you can put your unique talents to good use, develop your leadership skills, and it looks great on your CV! Call us today to discuss how we can work together. Space is also available for girls in Christchurch at Pippins (5 - 6 years), Brownies (7 - 9 1/2 years), Guides (9 - 12 1/2 years) and Rangers (12 1/2 - 17 years). By Andrew King CANTERBURY’S under-15 B girls hockey team have been crowned national champions for the sixth year in a row. The squad, made up mostly of students from north-west schools, travelled to Timaru to compete earlier this month. Their only loss came in pool play at the hands of Wanganui (2-3). They beat Manawatu (12-0), Thames Valley (7-0) and Hawkes Bay (4-0) before beating Waikato 4-0 in the quarter-final. After a tough 2-1 win over hosts South Canterbury in the semi-final, they faced Wellington. Christchurch Girls’ High’s Sophie Bowden slotted home the winner from a penalty corner with 4min to go. She then added another after Wellington subbed their goalie, to close out the game 4-2. Villa Maria’s Kate Davies was the top scorer for the side netting eight goals

during the tournament. The under-15 A girls team also won a national title after travelling to North Harbour. The team, made up entirely of northwest school students, went through the tournament undefeated. They finished top of their pool with wins against Otago (6-0), Taranaki (4-0) and Northland (1-0) before following this up with a tough quarter-final 2-1 victory against Waikato. They then had a 2-1 win against Auckland in their semi-final before finishing off a fantastic week with a hard-fought 1-0 win against hosts North Harbour in the final. Rangi’s Tessa Reid smashed home the winner in the 19min. The under-15 A boys were unsuccessful in defending their 2016 title, coming up short in Nelson and finishing their tournament in fourth. The under-15 B boys were knocked out in their quarter-final and finished fifth in their tournament in

Invercargill. Under-15 A squad: Burnside’s Payton Anderson and Kelly Newlands; CGHS’s Grace Ansell and Emily Bowden; St Margaret’s Georgia Bonne, Sophie Calder, Isabella House, Jemma Watson and Isabella Story; Rangi’s Anneke Calder, Hayley McKellow, Kate Edwards and Tessa Reid; St Andrew’s Aleisha Davis and Papanui High’s Demi Te Mete. Jessica McLennan was also in the squad. Under-15 B squad: CGHS’s Sophie Bowden, Cass Hetherington, Rose Stephenson and Sophie Williamson; Villa Maria’s Kate Davies, Niamh Hughes, Lucy Seaford and Alice Twaddell; Burnside’s Paris Hawthorne and Freyja Marshall; St Margaret’s Molly Dougherty, Charlotte Idiens and Chelsea Parrett; Rangi’s Annabelle Schneideman and Meg Smith and Lincoln High’s Abby Kettles.

Clinic offers easy solution to varicose veins If varicose veins are a problem for you, the dedicated, professional team at Transform Clinic in Mandeville Street Riccarton can provide the perfect solution. Firstly, they will give you a free assessment of your veins, and then suggest the appropriate method of treatment, depending on the condition of the veins. There are two methods available – endo-venous laser treatment, which is used for both smaller and larger veins, and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. Both are easy and straightforward, and you can be fully active immediately afterwards, without needing to take any time off work, or curtail your normal activities. The only requirement is for you to wear special stockings for two weeks following treatment, and daily walking is recommended. Both these treatments give long-term relief from the pain and discomfort of varicose veins, and as Transform Clinic’s Jenny Little points out, they have become the treatment method of today, with surgical removal of varicose veins now considered obsolete. Jenny advises having treatment as early as possible when varicose veins start to appear, as left untreated they may lead to venous ulcers and venous eczema, although

if these have developed, Transform Clinic can treat them as well. Transform Clinic has an affiliation with health provider Southern Cross and relationships with several other health insurance companies, which means you are usually covered for treatment, providing it is included in your policy. Transform Clinic also offers a full range of appearance medicine options, including skin rejuvenation and skin-tightening treatments designed to improve skin quality and enhance self-esteem. They remove superficial veins on the legs and face, and also provide mole mapping, mole removal and primary skin cancer removal. Their website, www.transformclinic.co.nz, has information on all the various treatments available. “We are a ‘one-stop shop’ for all cosmetic medicine treatments,” says Jenny. Transform Clinic is discreetly located at 52a Mandeville Street. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30am, with late nights on Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Phone 343-2880 to enquire about treatments or make an appointment.

Over the past few years Lana has claimed numerous awards, including
